Job Description
Full-time Production Scheduling Coordinator needed for scheduling of video production crews for video oral history interviews of African Americans across the country. Must have prior experience with the scheduling of video production crews and possess strong multi-tasking administrative, organizational, phone and database management skills. Proficient user of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word and Access as well as prior experience as a computer and library researcher. Must be a strong writer of business correspondence and biographies. The position requires the daily reading of newspapers and other publications for prospective interview candidates. Director of Development sought for The HistoryMakers, a national African American nonprofit educational/archival institution. This is a newly created position for an organization that is experiencing tremendous growth and seeks to move to the next stage. Annual revenues are $1.5 million. Seek to grow to $3 million annually.
The Director of Development will report directly to the Founder & Executive Director. The person hired must be able to develop a solid and productive working relationship with the Founder & Executive Director. Must have prior knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and possess strong sales and marketing expertise. Also, prior experience raising $1,000,000 with a small to medium-sized organization. Start up or early stage experience preferred.

• Solicit for a new major gifts program called Sponsor a HistoryMaker($2500-$20,000 per gift)to generate $1,000,000 in gifts in 2007 and increasing amounts on an annual basis thereafter.
• Develop and implement a plan to use The HistoryMakers database, special events, website and other solicitations as resources for major gift prospects.
• Develop an effective moves management system to ensure timely identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all major gift prospects.
• Play an instrumental role in planning and implementing The HistoryMakersAn Evening With…celebrity interview PBS-TV interview series as well as smaller events.
• Develop all briefing materials, strategies, proposals, presentations, reports, etc. in accordance with The HistoryMakers guidelines.
• Fulfill other duties as assigned.

The HistoryMakers, a national not-for-profit 501 c (3)
organization, seeks regional producer/interviewer/oral historian
for the Washington, D.C./Maryland/Virginia Region to conduct 2-4
hour oral history videotaped interviews of accomplished African
Americans and work closely with a regional videographer to ensure
that all interviews are done in a quality manner. Must be a great
interviewer, have prior oral history/journalistic and/or TV production
experience and be able to make each subject feel at ease. Must
be well-read in African American subject matter and capable of
working well as part of a team. Must research and conduct each
interview according to the organizations standards, complete
necessary paperwork, write both a long and short bio on each interviewee
and be willing to travel as deemed necessary or appropriate. Must
be ethical with strong track record, hardworking, able to maintain
confidentiality and capable of representing The HistoryMakers
organization well while working in a demanding, multi-tasked environment.
The producer interviewer will be paid $250 per completed and approved
interview. The position will start out part time with the possibility
of full time employment at the annual salary of $40,000 per year.

Associate Director sought for The HistoryMakers, a national African American nonprofit educational/archival institution. The HistoryMakers seeks an experienced Betacam SP videographer to videotape documentary style oral history interviews for the Atlanta and Washington, D.C area. The HistoryMakers is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit, research and educational institution committed to preserving on videotape, and making widely accessible, the untold personal stories of both well known and unsung African Americans. Through the media and a series of user-friendly products, services and events, the HistoryMakers enlightens, entertains and educates the public helping to refashion a more inclusive record of American history.
The Videographer will be responsible for:
• Videotaping a minimum of 200 interviews annually (each interview is an average of 3 hours in length not including set up and tear down)
• Videotaping an average of 2 interviews daily
• Labeling tapes appropriately
• Ensuring completion of ALL paperwork for each HistoryMaker in the region and submitting required reports
• Working closely with an interviewer/oral historian to ensure ALL interviews are conducted in accordance with the HistoryMakers guidelines
• Performing other responsibilities as assigned
• Reporting to the national headquarters in Chicago, Illinois
• The Preferred Qualifications include:
• A minimum of 2-4 years experience shooting on Betacam SP and working with Betacam SP ENG equipment
• Proficiency with camera maintenance including cleaning heads and troubleshooting
• Demonstrated experience with shooting ENG/documentary style video
• Proficiency in documentary style lighting using gobos, gel and chimera
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Own cell phone, computer, fax machine and transportation

Internships are available on a semester or January-term basis
and can be tailored to fit the skills and interests of the student.
Interns are guaranteed hands-on experience. Most interns are given
their own projects with specific deadlines. Interns are matched
with projects consistent with their interests and skill levels.
Areas of intern activity include:
Research/Writing
Conduct background research on individual
HistoryMakers prior to interviews using periodicals, the Internet,
monographs, and other materials.
Research and writing HistoryMaker biographies,
glossary terms and timeline items for The HistoryMakers
website.
Conduct donor research to expand our funding
base; may participate in compiling and organizing information
for use in writing grant proposals.
Copy editing/transcript reviewing: watch 2-4
hour interview and research and edit it for accuracy consistent
with The HistoryMakers standards.
Archival Assistant Intern should be trained in/working
in library or archives to assist in the processing of video collection
as well as to write and develop finding aids. This position requires
knowledge of archival bar code programs and FileMaker Pro database
helpful.

This position is primarily responsible for identifying prospects and securing grants from foundations, corporations and government agencies. The position is also responsible for managing corporate, government and foundation relationships for long-term growth, including appropriate stewardship activities.

The HistoryMakers Visiting Scholars Program is open to any applicant that is qualified. Emphasis is given to those pursuing post-doctoral research and African American studies, history, American studies, political science, humanities and other fields. Graduate students involved in research, publication, thesis or dissertation are encouraged to apply. Interested undergraduate and lay researchers are also invited to apply. The HistoryMakers will evaluate each research proposal based on its merits and funding for a variety of topics is expected. No standardized form is required for the application. Instead, a series of documents should be sent to The HistoryMakers including: (1) a description of the research proposal in fewer than 1000 words; (2) a personal vita; (3) an explanation of how The HistoryMakers’ resources will assist the researcher; (4) a budget proposal; and (5) a letter of reference from an established scholar in the discipline attesting to the significance of the research.
